CFL Recycling Program Brings

Energy Efficiency Full CIrcle

Michigan Energy Options has nearly completed setting up 200 new Compact Fluorescent Light bulb (CFL) Recycling sites in almost every corner of the state through a program funded by the Michigan Public Service Commission.

This program follows in the steps of Change A Light, Change Michigan where MEO distributed nearly a million CFLs from 2008 through 2010 at a discounted rate.  While CFLs do wonders for conserving energy and reducing bills, they contain a small amount of mercury (a neurotoxin) and need to be disposed of properly at the end of their usable life.

One of our partners who has helped us setup additional recycling sites, the West Michigan Environmental Action Council has recently started a program called Project Light Change.  This program helps save energy by giving free CFLs to residents of the City of Grand Rapids.

It is particularly important as Project Light Change kicks off that residents get up to speed on the proper disposal of CFLs, especially since the City of Grand Rapids incinerates their trash.  WMEAC started distributing 20,000 bulbs to residents via Neighborhood Associations in June.  Our recent partnership with WMEAC on our CFL Recycling program will help educate residents and alleviate some of the disposal problems with CFLs.
